The Weeks of Sept. 27 and Oct. 4

This week we will be discussing college essays in class. While we are doing this in class, you will be reading Persepolis or Maus on your own and completing the log entry assignment. Due dates are listed below:

College Essay Question(s): Due Wednesday, Sept. 29
Rough draft of college essay prompt: Due Monday, Oct. 4
Reading of graphic novel and log entry assignment: Due Tuesday, Oct. 5

College Essay (2nd Rough Draft) due on Monday, October 11. This draft must be completed and typed. I will read it and give you a score out of 20 points.

Other upcoming assignments: Oct. 6-Oct.13 you will be working on group presentations for Stiff. You will need to read your assigned chapter by Friday, October 8 and the rest of the assigned chapters by Thursday, Oct. 14. We will begin the presentations on Thursday, Oct. 14. I will keep you posted on this assignment during our class period.

We will read "Stockings" in class (pages 17 & 18)

Due Wednesday, Sept. 15:
"Love" and "Spin" (pages 27-38)

Due Thursday, Sept. 16:
"On the Rainy River" (pages 39-61)

Due Friday, Sept. 17:
The Things They Carried Writing Assignment (Rough Draft)

Due Monday, Sept. 20:
"Enemies," "Friends," "How to Tell a True War Story," and "Dentist" (pages 62-88)

Due Tuesday, Sept. 21:
I will assign you one of the following chapters to have been completed for today:
"The Man I Killed" (pages 124-130)
"Ambush"(pages 131-134)
You all must read:
"Good Form" (pages 179-180)

Due Wednesday, Sept. 22:
Titles and artists to three Contemporary War Songs (print out lyrics to one of your choices)

Due Thursday, Sept. 23:
"Speaking of Courage" (pages 137-154)
"Notes" (pages 155-161)
"In the Field" (pages 162-178)
"Field Trip" (pages 181-188)

Due Friday, Sept. 24:
"Sweet Heart of the Song Tra Bong" (pages 89-116)
You will be reading the last chapter in class today -- "The Lives of the Dead." Pay close attention to Tim's story about Linda.

Monday, Sept. 27:
You will have an end writing on The Things They Carried
You will need to bring in a college essay topic from a college of your choice

The Week of Sept. 6-10

You will be reading and discussing the following essays during class on Tuesday and Wednesday:
"I am Writing Blindly" - Roger Rosenblatt
"Why I Write" - Wiilliam Saroy An
"Why I Write" - George Orwell
"Everything You Need to Know About Writing Successfully..." - Stephen King

You will be working on a rough draft of your own "Why I Read" or "Why I Write" essay in class on Thursday. The rough draft (20 points) is to be completed for Friday, Sept. 6. Students will do peer evaluations on Friday.

You will receive The Things They Carried on Friday, Sept. 6. Please read the first chapter (pages 1-26) for Monday, Sept. 13.
