Assignments for the Week of December 17th

Monday, December 17th --

We will continue our discussion on text messaging by reading Jennie Bristow's article "Text Messaging: Take Note" and Charles McGrath's "The Pleasure of the Text." You will then create your own process analysis paper explaining why text messaging is necessary and how to use it properly. Guess who is your audience? Me...a mother of a teenager and a pre-teen. I am clueless on how to text message! I also do not know why it is necessary for my children to have the ability to text message on their cell phones.

You must do the following for this process analysis paper:
  • Have an introduction -- The introduction should have a hook and a thesis statement.
  • Part I of the body -- Convince the reader why text messaging is a good thing and when is an appropriate time to text message rather than making a phone call.
  • Part II of the body -- Teach the reader how easy it is to text message. You must give step by step instructions on all of those great short cuts you know!
  • Part III of the body -- Create a text messaging dictionary for the reader...frequently used abbreviations or symbols are needed.
  • Have a conclusion

The rough draft of this paper (Assignment # 3) will be due Tuesday, December 18th.

Tuesday, December 18th --

The text messaging process analysis paper is due today!

Today we will be reading "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid and an article ("How to be a Good Wife") from a 1950's Home Economics textbook. Your final paper (Assignment # 4) for the Process Analysis Unit will be due tomorrow. You can do one of the following: Mimic Jamaica Kincaid's "Girl" by giving a set of instructions from one person to another...like a father to a son, a teacher to a student, a coach to a player, a doctor to a patient OR take "How to be a Good Wife" and revise it to fit a more modern point of view. The rough draft for this paper will be due tomorrow.

I will be handing out Orwell's 1984 today. You will need to read Section I, Chapters I-V (pages 1-63) for January 2nd.
