Memoir

You must choose a memoir to read by Friday, March 25.

Your written memoir is to be completed by Tuesday, March 29. If you are absent, it must be e-mailed to me.

We will begin our Cause and Effect Unit during the week of March 28. As we complete this unit in class, you should be reading your chosen memoir outside of class.

Catcher in the Rye

Writing Assignment: Choose Writing Prompt # 1 (Description of an object or Place) or Writing Prompt # 2 (Color Essay). Both of these prompts are short writing prompts. You must have a typed draft. Due: Friday, March 18. If you are absent, please e-mail me your paper on that same day. A day late will be accepted via e-mail on Saturday, March 19 & two days late will be accepted on Sunday, March 20. Of course, each day late means a letter grade lower. No papers will be accepted after Sunday, March 20.

Memoir: You will be writing your memoir. This will be discussed in class during the week of March 14. The due date for your memoir will be announced in class.

Begin searching for a memoir to read. You may choose your own. I have a few different titles you can choose from, too.

March 7 - The Catcher in the Rye

The Catcher in the Rye

You should have completed the reading of the novel. The novel will be the basis of many rough drafts of narration and description papers. Please listen in class to the different writing topics and their due dates.

Due Wednesday, March 9: Voice of Holden Writing Prompt (topic of your choice...fairytale, response to a current event, a reaction to a sports figure, etc.)

February 28-March 11

Due Tuesday, February 22: Read and complete the ditto for chapters 1-7 of The Catcher in the Rye.
Due Friday, February 25: Chapters 8-12 of The Catcher in the Rye
Due Monday, February 28: Chapters 13-15 of The Catcher in the Rye
Due Friday, March 4: Chapters 16-20 of The Catcher in the Rye
Due Monday, March 7: Chapters 21-the end of The Catcher in the Rye

February 14-18

(1) Speech Information

For Me: A final copy of the speech, works cited page, and a handout of your visual (PowerPoint)
For You: A copy of the speech -- This is what you will have in front of you for your presentation.

Please practice your speech. Do not come in and just read from your paper.

(2) Scholarship Application Information

Come to class on Friday, February 18 with the necessary information needed for beginning the local scholarship application. We will meet in computer lab # 438 to begin the process. This will enable you to ask questions about the application. You will finalize the application on your own and must hand it in to guidance on the due date. They will not accept late applications.

(3) Catcher in the Rye Information

Read Chapters 1-7 and complete the handout on Narrative Techniques and Characterization for Tuesday, February 22.

Persuasion and Argument Unit

We will use the next two weeks to complete the Persuasion and Argument unit.

February 7-9: We will meet in Computer Lab 438. These three days will be used to begin the typing of your persuasive speech. Review the handout discussing how to write the speech and what will be needed on the day of your presentation. You will only have these three days in class to work on this. All other work is to be completed at home. The typed speech is due on Monday, February 14.

February 14-17: All students are to have their speeches and presentations prepared for Monday, February 14. We will begin the speeches on this day. Speeches should be approximately 10 minutes in length. You will be graded on the written speech (50 points) and on the oral presentation (25 points). Please review the rubrics given to you in class.

February 18: We will be back into the computer lab on Friday, February 18 to begin filling out the local scholarship application.

January 2011

Persuasion and Argument Unit Update

Library days will continue into this week. Please meet me in the library on Tuesday, January 18 through Monday, January 24.

We will begin discussing the writing of the paper and the presentation during class on Monday, January 24.

Exam Update

Exams start on Tuesday, January 25 (Period 1 Exam). The following will help in preparation for the 12 CP-A Exam:

Review characters, plots, themes, etc. in The Things They Carried, Brave New World/1984, Persepolis/Maus, Stiff, and Anthem. Think about the audience, purpose, and strategy for each of the works.

Review the Comparison/Contrast and the Argument/Persuasion PowerPoints. These are the two main modes of writing we have focused on during the first semester.
